Love Those Blueberries!
That gorgeous blue-purplish color itself is enough to make you stop and take notice of this delicate fruit. The Maine blueberries are small but sweet. They are called “wild” to designate their tiny size. Growers use them for making incredible jams and jellies. Hidden away in that smaller fruit is higher amounts of precious nutrients and antioxidants. Blueberries are bursting with anthocyanins and resveratrol. These are two different classes of ingredients that drastically lower chances of chronic diseases like cancer and heart problems. Freeze enough blueberries so they are available for use throughout the year. This is one fruit that you try to consume daily. I call it a “foodaceutical!” This is my term for a powerful food that if consumed on a regular basis, has a strong effect like a prescription medication, only safer.

Dark Chocolate is another addition to the superfood family. Look for at least 70% or greater cocoa content for the most protective effects. Yes, it is high in fat. Only one ounce please. Make it last a long time by letting it slowly liquefy in your mouth. Higher amounts of dark chocolate have more antioxidants and lesser quantities of that sweet white stuff. In fact, the darker variety has from 30-60% less sugar than milk chocolate. Chocolate is beneficial in lowering blood pressure and decreases both cholesterol and blood sugar.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a product that has been made for the last 4,500 years. This variety of olive oil gives us the highest antioxidant effect. Try not to exceed more than 2 tablespoonfuls (1 ounce) for each use because it’s 100% liquid fat. The beneficial oils in this fruit are called MUFA (monounsaturated fatty acids). MUFA prevents arteries from getting blocked. These oils also reduce both cholesterol and blood clots. Blot clots can cause heart attacks and strokes.
Tea is another high-powered drink that is infused with various antioxidants called polyphenols. The different varieties have different types of protective ingredients. Tea lowers risk of cancers, heart disease and brain problems including Alzheimer’s Disease. Most health benefits result from drinking at least several cups daily. Popular varieties of tea are white, green, oolong and black. Tea catechins (antioxidants) have an attraction for the same area that THC (active ingredient in marijuana) attaches to in the body. This is part of the reason why tea is such a calming beverage. So boil some water, pour, steep and relax. Ahhhhh.
