The FDA has been sitting on pending applications for safer and better sunscreen ingredients. Some of these files have been gathering dust on this Federal Agency’s desk for close to 10 years. In 2009, they said the final analysis of these applications would be completed by the end of the year. Of course, here we are, years later and still waiting for better protection from the sun.

The rest of the world has longer acting and safer/more protective ingredients in their sun protection products for over a decade.

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers primarily from sun overexposure. Over 1 million Americans are diagnosed yearly with this type of cancer. These new ingredients would lower disease risk and help reduce mortality from the most deadly type of skin cancer called malignant melanoma. It causes almost 10,000 deaths yearly in US.

Now the House of Representatives passed a law called the Sunscreen Innovation Act. This legislation would require the FDA to move its carcass and start analyzing these 8 new ingredients for a near future approvals. The only problem is that this Act allows the FDA another year for final decisions to be made on the sunscreen chemicals. So the spanking from the House was only a love tap meant to appease the voters.

Enough is enough with regards to all the responsibilities that the FDA has to handle and can’t because of lack of funds and shortage of personnel. There needs to be a full investigation as to why priorities such as significantly reducing cancer with modern chemistry is taking a back burner to everything else.

In 2002, the FDA enacted a new ingredient process application. It was called (TEA) Time and Extent Application. This was supposed to speed up the approval process for new ingredients. TEA didn’t put any time limitations on this process. It was a good idea on paper that doesn’t work in a “real world” setting. In regards to the 8 ingredients waiting for possible approval, TEA has been brewing for years.
